When a Jewish person named a child, a lot of prayer went into the selection. Names were prophetic. They spoke of character and destiny. Our kid’s names are significant… Zacchaeus’ name means, “pure, innocent…”
Zacchaeus likely felt shame around his name. It was likely used as a term of derision by the people who owed him money, hated him.
His mom and dad had hoped that he would be pure and innocent but he had turned his life into a mess. Somehow, he got off track, got lured down a wrong path. He short-changed himself, he gained the world, but forfeited his soul... At some point he gave up on himself.
