Bible Text: Psalm 107:1-43 |

Series:

One of the most often quoted verses around this time of year finds its origins in 1 Chronicles 16:34, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”  At first blush, this verse seems to be one of those shiny happy verses about someone whose life is going well for them.

But thanksgiving isn’t just for people who have things going well for them.  Sometimes we think thanksgiving is for people with plenty, people who enjoy abundance, people who have experienced blessing.  Thanksgiving, however, is more of a heart-set or a mind-set.

Most of life isn’t a linear trajectory or a painless experience.  It’s filled with hurdles and detours.  The origins of the verse that we just read is one that was filled with failure, loss, anger, shame and struggle.  It’s found in the story of King David trying to bring the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem, to the tabernacle.
