Bible Text: Luke 1:46-56 | John Cook, Stephen Weenink
Series: Advent Conspiracy
Christmas has become less about the worship of and anticipation of the coming of Jesus as our Redeeming King and more about the celebration of rampant consumerism and excess.
- Canadians spend over $70 billion dollars annually on Christmas.
- In contrast, Canadians give around $10.6 billion dollars to charity.
In contrast to our spending at Christmas, this is what it would cost to solve the world’s biggest problems:
- $30 billion/yr. to feed the world’s hungry for a year (7.6 million die/yr.)
- $8.5 billion to end malaria related deaths once & for all (4 million die/yr.)
- $150 billion to end the world water crisis once & for all (3.4 million die/yr.)
It all comes down to a choice of what we think is actually important:
- More stuff or helping others.
- Our choice is to ignore the problem or involve ourselves.
We can continue to accumulate excess and ignore the problem or we can immerse ourselves in the story of changing the world.
