Bible Text: John 20:1-18 | John Cook, Stephen Weenink
Series: Holy Week 2021
Jesus reveals Himself to Mary in the moment of her desperation. I love that about Jesus. Ps. 34:18, “The Lord is near to the broken-hearted & saves the crushed in spirit.”
Once Jesus says her name, Mary recognizes Jesus: She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”).
Jesus connects personally and intimately with her and instantly she remembers. All her memories of Him come flooding back:
- Her rescue. Her transformation. The hope she had in Him.
- It all becomes new again because He says her name.
- By saying her name Jesus shows her that He’s still alive, still at work.
Jesus knows us: He knows our history, our shame, our sin, our lack of faith, but He doesn’t speak those things over us. Jesus knows us, and yet He loves us. Instead, He speaks our name. He rescues us by speaking our name.
